A woman from upstate New York with a 20-plus-year history in working with arts organizations will be the first full-time executive director of North Valley Arts Council, a local arts advocacy group that sponsors, among other things, the Grand Cities Art Fest.

Pamela Eaton Siers was hired after the NoVAC board interviewed four candidates. She will begin work Sept. 21. The previous director, Nicole Derenne, resigned in part to spend more time with her young family.

Mike Jacobs, president of the NoVAC board and editor and publisher of the Grand Forks Herald, said NoVAC had excellent programs and wanted a director with a range of experience who could look at what NoVAC has done and imagine ways to advance and enhance it.

"What made Pamela Eaton Siers stand out from a really good set of applicants is she has been in a variety of arts situations and she has always left them better than when she got there," Jacobs said Friday. "And that's what we expect from her at NoVAC."

Eaton Siers most recently has worked as a consultant to artists and arts organizations and just finished research on a book for another author who is writing about nonprofit arts. She has 23 years in nonprofit arts administration.

She'll come to Grand Forks from Newcomb, N.Y., a town of 450 in the Adirondacks, and said she looks forward to the challenge in Grand Forks.

"I would like to say I have a great track record in development and I attempt to get both the board and the community to think somewhat out of the box," she said. She also promotes earned income and marketing.

Some of the organizations for which she has worked are Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, Vermont Mozart Festival in Burlington, Vt., and Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, Calif. She has an undergraduate degree from University of Tennessee in Knoxville, has studied at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., and has certification from the Professional Arts Management Institute in New York and University of California Long Beach.

The North Valley Arts Council is an umbrella organization of arts enterprises that conducts several events including the Grand Cities Arts Fest, Art & Wine Walk and an annual awards event. It provides coordinated marketing and support for arts groups and advocacy for the arts in the community and is a re-grant agency for arts funding that come to the City of Grand Forks.
