MARILYN HAGERTY: Seek and ye shall find turkey dinners year round

You would think June was made for hotdogs from the barbecue and fish from area lakes. Still, the response was swift and sure when a reader asked last week where she could find a real turkey dinner around here.

You would think June was made for hotdogs from the barbecue and fish from area lakes. Still, the response was swift and sure when a reader asked last week where she could find a real turkey dinner around here.

Quickly, a couple readers pointed out real turkey dinners are regular fare in the restaurant at the Flying J truck stop at the intersection of Interstate 29 and 32nd Avenue South. Said Marla Hoff, "I had that dinner a week ago and it was wonderful!"

Then a couple of reports came in pointing out that Perkins serves complete, real turkey dinners every day. A caller from Grafton, N.D., insists the turkey dinner served at Shenanigans restaurant is wonderful.

A reader from Thief River Falls called to say the turkey dinner served every Thursday is wonderful and moderately priced. And Susan Green reports from St. Thomas, N.D., that an awesome turkey dinner for the noon meal is served every Thursday. It includes mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, vegetable, bread, cranberry sauce -- and of course, turkey.

"Your grandma would have been proud to serve a meal like this on Thanksgiving," she said in an email. "People start arriving by 11:30 a.m. on Turkey Day, as it is known by the locals. St. Thomas is about 60 miles north of Grand Forks on Highway 81. It is worth the trip."

So much for turkey dinners in June. Other readers have something to say in response to my recent open letter to bagger people at supermarkets. Mike Connor of rural Starkweather, N.D., was reminded of the instructions he got at Leevers in Devils Lake when he was a BP years ago. He remembers Norm Leevers, the owner, personally showing how bags should be packed with canned goods at the bottom of the double paper bags and the fragile items on top. Refrigerated items all went in one bag and bread/bakery products always by themselves.

Connor is proud to be an alumni BP of the "Norm Leever school."

At the same time, Jeanne Atencio has a pretty good thought. She wonders why not use reusable grocery bags since they are environmentally a better choice. That would solve some of the problems with bags that break. And she says most reusable bags have square bottoms.

Ask Marilyn

Q. Is the Sky-Vu Drive Inn still running on Minn. Highway 1 over by Warren, Minn.?

A. Yes. I have talked to a couple families who drove there and enjoyed the movies in their cars.

Q. How did the John C. Reilly and Friends concert go?

A. It was a full house at the Empire Arts Center and rousing applause for the blues and country music by singers including Tom Brosseau, who grew up in Grand Forks. John Reilly is an amazing talent and suggested if we can't call the UND Sioux the Sioux maybe we could call them the Sizzling Sugar Beets.
