'Christmas Harmonies' program Dec. 11 in Roseau

A Christmas program of music and stories will be presented Dec. 11 in Roseau, Minn., in conjunction with the Smithsonian traveling exhibit "New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music" and sponsored by the Roseau County Historical Society & Museum.

"Christmas Harmonies" will begin at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Roseau School Theater followed by coffee and cookies served by historical society board members.

The Smithsonian traveling exhibit "New Harmonies" will be at the Roseau County Museum in Roseau through Dec. 31. It tells the story of American music through photographs, recordings, instruments, lyrics and artist profiles, a news release said, and explores the sounds that were native to the U.S. or were inspired from foreign cultures.

The Roseau County Museum companion exhibit showcases the area people, places and music, from the music heard at barn dances and weddings, hymns, school band and choir concerts, Ojibwe powwows, Warroad Summer Theater performances and more.

Dawn Johnson, chairman of "Christmas Harmonies," said the event would bring together talented local artists and groups. The program will feature madrigal Christmas songs directed by Bonnie Wensloff and performers such as The Overtones; the trio of Dean Hedlund, Don Guttormson and Bonnie Guttormson; K. C. Douglas; Mitch Johnson; Signature trio members Millie Pracher, Londa Olson and Elaine Wulff; a bell choir and more.

"Christmas Harmonies" is sponsored by Border State Bank , Doug's Supermarket, Marvin Windows & Doors, Northern Resources, Polaris Industries Inc., Roseau Liquor Store, Security State Bank of Warroad, Thrivent Financial, Titan Machinery, Thune Insurance Network, and Roseau VFW Post 8663.

The program has been funded in part by a grant from the Minnesota Arts Council and the Minnesota Arts and Culture Heritage Fund. Exhibit and event info: (218) 463-1918.
