The Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra will present "Old & New," a concert featuring small ensemble music by composers from the baroque era and later, at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Forks.
The music in "Old & New" will be performed by small groups of musicians in the intimate setting of the church, a news release said, and many of the musical compositions were designed for small numbers of string and wind instruments. They highlight the ornamental, harmonic sounds of the baroque era.
The concert will begin with Vivaldi's "Winter," the original work of the Four Seasons concerto, and end with Piazzolla's "Winter of Buenos Aires," a work on the same theme but with a tango twist. The concert repertoire also features Handel, Albinoni, Bach, Wagne, Hindemith and and Honneger.
Highlights of the concert will include solo performances by four musicians who have been long-standing members of the orchestra. Alejandro Drago, UND assistant professor of music and symphony concertmaster, will perform a violin solo in the renowned "Winter from Four Seasons" by Vivaldi, as well as a solo in Piazzolla's "Winter from Four Seasons of Buenos Aires."
Ronnie Ingle, UND assistant professor of music, will perform a trumpet solo. A viola solo will be performed by Gerald Gaul, and Sarahlyn Robinson will perform a solo on the harp.
