Internationally acclaimed artists and potters Tom and Elaine Coleman will visit UND beginning Tuesday as part of the Department of Art and Design Visiting Artist Series.
The two met in 1964, married in 1967 and received their arts education in Portland, Ore. In 1972 they moved out of Portland to Canby, Ore., with their two boys and set up a pottery studio, moving to Henderson, Nev., in 1987.
Since college graduation, Tom Coleman has been a full time studio potter, a news release said. They opened Coleman Clay Studio in Las Vegas from 1994 to 2001, a studio for throwing classes and private studio spaces and a gallery. Tom Coleman now works in his studio at home and does many workshops and shows each year. The desert has greatly influenced his work just as the Northwest did.
Elaine Coleman did mostly slab work in the 1970s and handbuilt pieces. In 1975 she began incising some of Tom's porcelain pots. Tom and Elaine have been collaborating on their work for 35 years. He throws all of her pieces now and she does the surface design. Elaine does some workshops with Tom and many exhibitions. They have a showroom for serious buyers open by appointment only.
Tuesday and Wednesday at 5 p.m. the Colemans will be in Room 227 of UND Hughes Fine Arts Center. At noon and from 1:30 to 4:30 Tuesday and Wednesday they will be giving demonstrations. These presentations are free and open to the public:
