- What: "Cold Recall: Reflections of a Polar Explorer" is a traveling exhibit of one of the greatest adventures of the early 20th century: The race to the South Pole.

- When and where: On display through April 27 at UND Chester Fritz Library.

- The story: Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen and his team were the first to reach the South Pole on Dec. 14, 1911, just weeks before a competing expedition, an event celebrated in his native Norway and throughout the world. It is considered one of the great triumphs of human endurance of the age.

- The exhibit: A collection of 48 posters, it features hand-colored lantern slides taken by Amundsen crew member Olav Bjaaland during the expedition. Accompanying texts on the posters stem from Amundsen's writings. "Cold Recall," created by the Fram Museum of Oslo, Norway, in partnership with the Royal Norwegian Embassy, is touring the U.S. This will be its only stop in North Dakota.

- UND's own polar explorer: Jaakko Putkonen, UND assistant professor of geology and geological engineering, who has traveled to the South Pole for research, will speak at 7 p.m. April 17 at UND Chester Fritz Library. He will introduce members of his student polar research team. Putkonen's presentation: "No Shower, No Problem." Admission: Free.
