111th Icelandic event opens today

The 111th annual Deuce of August Icelandic Celebration begins today and runs through Sunday in Mountain, N.D., with music, a parade and a visit from the Honorable J?hanna Sigur?ard?ttir, prime minister of Iceland.

The 111th annual Deuce of August Icelandic Celebration begins today and runs through Sunday in Mountain, N.D., with music, a parade and a visit from the Honorable Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, prime minister of Iceland.

- Today: 4 p.m., genealogy center opens; 9 p.m., street dance, Heroes and Thieves.

- Saturday: 10:30 a.m., parade; 11 a.m., book signing, Christina Sunley, "The Tricking of Freya," Vikur Church grounds; noon, car show and shine and kids' games get under way; 2 p.m., Heritage Program, special guest Honorable Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, Borg Home, bring your own lawn chair; 4 p.m., old-time dance, Matt Hodek and the Dakota Dutchmen; 6 p.m., Icelandic Communities International Fellowship Supper, Borg Home lawn; 9 p.m., street dance, Free Beer.

- Sunday: 11 a.m., worship service; 1 p.m., North Dakota State Tractor & Pickup Pulling Contest.

A souvenir booth will sell Icelandic Hardfish, Saturday evening supper tickets and raffle tickets. Traditional Icelandic foods will be available after the parade on Saturday. Cash raffle prizes of $1,000 and $500 will be awarded, and an ATV will be raffled, with the drawings to be held at the conclusion of the Tractor Pull on Sunday.

Sir Magnus Olafson will be parade grand marshall and G.B. Gunlogson will be parade honorary grand marshall. The event is sponsored in part by a grant from the North Dakota Tourism Department.
