Director Barb Geer wants anyone who attends the Thief River Falls Community Theater performance of “Steel Magnolias” to be prepared.
After three weeks of preparations, Geer said anyone attending the show better be ready for all of the emotions that come with “Steel Magnolias.”
“Everybody should bring their Kleenexes,” Geer said. “They’re going to need them either because of laughter until they get tears or crying.”
“Steel Magnolias” is a comedy-drama play about the bond among a group of Southern women in Louisiana. Originally written by Robert Harling, the story is based on his experience with his sister’s death. The play was made into a movie in 1989, starring the likes of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine.
“Steel Magnolias” is the third and final production put on by the Thief River Falls Community Theater this summer. The theater has also performed “Forever Plaid,” which was also directed by Geer, and “The Fantasticks.”
“Steel Magnolias” opens on the Northland Community and Technical College Theater stage on July 21 and runs through July 24. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the shows beginning at 7.
Geer said she would put the six local women in the play against anyone else, including the cast of the 1989 movie.
“This cast has so much charisma,” Geer said. “The audience and everyone who sees this play is going to love them.”
Tickets are $10, and can be purchased at Digi-Key’s East reception area, Hugo’s and at the door if available.
