The 11th annual Global Friends’ Community Picnic will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at University Park.
The free event, sponsored by the Global Friends Coalition and co-hosted by the UND International Organization, will feature ethnic foods, hot dogs, fruit, games and music.
Hot dogs will be provided by the Salvation Army. Ethnic foods, representing the Somali and Nepali cultures, will include chicken curry and vegetarian curry.
A dish that is “tasty and a little spicy,” called chatpate’, will also be served, said Cynthia Shabb, program director with the Global Friends Coalition. “It has lots of vegetables, very crunchy, with puffed rice. I think of it as a salad, but I’m told it’s more of a snack.”
All food will be prepared in a certified kitchen and delivered to the site, she said.

The picnic is a way for people to get to know other cultures and “foster integration,” Shabb said.
Ambassadors who are fluent in English and their native language will be on hand “to broker conversations with older people” of different backgrounds, she said.
“This year, we’re hoping for real good interaction, a true community event," said Shabb, adding that 700 people attended last year's picnic.
