Frost Fire Summer Theatre will host its third annual Encore Arts Day Camp at Frost Fire Park in early August near Walhalla, N.D.

The arts day camp for students in grades three through 12 will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 5. Buses to Frost Fire Park will be available, for a fee, from the North Dakota towns of Minto, Grafton, Park River, Drayton, Cavalier, Edinburg, Mountain, Langdon and Walhalla.

The day camp’s organizers wanted to have bus transportation available for students because Frost Fire Summer Theatre is in a rural location about seven miles from Walhalla, the nearest town.

“We’re trying to reach out to as many areas as we possibly can,” said David Paukert, Frost Fire Summer Theatre manager.

Students will be divided into groups based on their age and will spend the mornings and afternoons rotating through classes that teach them a variety of arts.

“The camp is designed to have a performing arts and a visual arts experience,” Paukert said.

Performing arts classes will include creative dramatics, movement, improvisation and vocal music. During the visual arts classes, students will learn about drawing, painting and pottery.

Craig Petersen, formerly of Larimore, N.D., his wife, Kristin Larson, and Misti Koop, a Minto Public Schools music teacher, will lead the performing arts classes. Petersen has played leading roles at Frost Fire Summer Theatre in past years and now is a professional performer in Des Moines, Iowa. Meanwhile, Larson is a professor and chairman of the Grand View University theater arts department in Des Moines, and Koop is a former Frost Fire Summer Theatre and former Medora Musical performer.

Paukert will teach pottery and students will learn about painting from Mindi Lill, a Langdon arts teacher. Amy Jo Paukert is the third visual arts teacher.

About 60 students attended the Frost Fire Summer Theatre Encore Arts Day Camp in 2019. Paukert hopes that this year the number of students will equal or exceed that number. Groups of students will be small and spread out throughout the Frost Fire grounds to reduce the potential for spreading COVID-19, Paukert said.

The 2021 Frost Fire Summer Theatre Encore Arts Day Camp will conclude with a performance and art show on Friday, Aug. 6.
