Empire’s musical ‘Falsettos’ tells tale of dysfunctional family

Family dysfunction is getting the musical comedy treatment at the Empire Arts Center, as the Empire Theatre Company's season continues with this month's production of "Falsettos." The Tony Award-winning musical's story follows Marvin as he leaves his wife and son for another man and then strives to keep his tightknit family under one roof. Naturally, things get a little messy. The Grand Forks production, directed by Chris Berg, features Darin Kerr as Marvin, Mackenzie Teepen as Trina, Timmy Hennessy as Jason, Michael Marcotte as Whizzer, Cody Gerszewski as Mendel, Emily Johnson as Dr. Charlotte and Abbey Immer as Cordelia.
 Marcotte, a Grand Forks native, is returning to town after performing with the L.A. Philharmonic and as part of the "City Center Encores" show in New York City. "(I am) thrilled to be back home performing," he said in an Empire Arts Center press release. Performances began Thursday night and continue at 7:30 p.m. today, Saturday, Thursday and Feb. 12 and 13. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and military. Art party Artist Adam Kemp is directing the interactive monthlong installation "Welcome New Americans, Old Americans and You" at Third Street Gallery. The exhibit encourages public participation, and an art party for those interested will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
