MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Delchar Theater in Mayville will be one of only seven in the United States to have free tickets available Saturday and Sunday for the movie "Free Guy," courtesy of Pluto TV.

The streaming service also will have available free popcorn and Pluto promotional swag for Delchar Theater movie customers at 7:15 p.m. showings on Saturday, Aug. 21, and on Sunday, Aug. 22. The nearest independent movie theater to Mayville where Pluto is paying for customers’ tickets is in Minneapolis. The other five theaters are in Atlanta; Spencer, Ind.; Berkeley Springs, West, Va.; Howell, Mich.; and Albuquerque, according to a news release from Pluto TV.

David Torgeson, who owns Delchar Theater with his wife, Heather, received an email from Pluto TV early last summer asking them if they wanted to show the movie free of charge, David Torgeson said.

After making sure the email and streaming service were credible, he told Pluto TV that they did.

“They sent me all kinds of stuff and gave us a donation,” Torgeson said. The donation will pay for the number of tickets he sells and he will give away the Pluto TV promotional material at the movies.

Torgeson has free tickets for "Free Guy" available online, and will have a few to give away at the door on Saturday and Sunday. The theater will fill 144 seats of the 222 or about 65% of the seats. The theater hasn’t been at capacity since it reopened in February 2021 as a COVID-19 safety precaution, Torgeson said.

“We want to make sure people still feel comfortable,” Torgeson said.

He and his wife feel fortunate that Pluto TV gave them the opportunity to offer free showings of "Free Guy" at Delchar Theater, he said.

“I think it’s great, it’s an exciting opportunity. When they mentioned us in their social media post, it was like ‘Whoa,’” Torgeson said, noting that the post brought national attention to Mayville. Meanwhile, Pluto TV’s goodwill gesture to his theater, which, like many others, suffered economic losses when they had to close during the coronavirus pandemic, brings positive attention to the Los Angeles company.

“I think it will definitely raise awareness for their service,” Torgeson said.
