The North Star Quilters Guild of Grand Forks will host the Quilting on the Red Quilt Show Oct. 18 through 20 at The Alerus Center.
Quilt makers from around the region will show nearly 200 quilts, which will be judged in 15 different categories including hand quilted, pieced quilts, group quilts and special technique. Ribbons will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each category.
"All the quilts are new this year; they've never been shown at our quilt show before," said Julie Borgstrom, publicity chairperson of the North Star Quilters Guild. "That's one of our guidelines."
Along with the quilt show, more than 40 various quilts and other handmade items have been donated for a silent auction that will benefit Camp Good Mourning, an annual three-day grief camp for children and teens who have experienced the death of a loved one.
Borgstrom said attendees can expect to see a variety of items including wood carvings and baskets of homemade jams.
There also will be vendors from local quilt shops and lectures by professional quilters Mary Fons and Cindy Brick.
"We've had lectures before, but I don't think we've ever had a nationally known presenter," said Borgstrom, who has been attending the quilt show since 1997.
Fons co-hosts the PBS program "Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting" and created Quilty, a bi-monthly magazine and online show offered weekly on QNNtv.com. She will offer two lectures "How to Learn to Quilt on National TV" at 10 a.m. and "A 30-Something Quilter Tells All" at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 19. A question-and-answer session will follow at 3:30 p.m. the same day.
Brick is an editor, designer and writer, who travels around the world teaching about quilting and quilt history. She will give a lecture titled "Romping through the Decade" at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.
Admission to the show is $5 daily, and the lectures are an additional $10 each. For more information, contact Suzanne Gandrud at (701) 795-8530 or email NSQuilters@aol.com .
