The Griffon String Quartet, the resident string quartet of Midsummer’s Music in Door County, Wisc., will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Muiderman Theatre in rural Thompson, N.D.
The concert program includes music by Haydn, Brahms, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Nariaki Sugiura, member of the music faculty, and the UND String Quartet also will perform with the quartet on select pieces.
The Griffon String Quartet includes violinist Vinicius Sant’Ana, who earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance at UND in 2016. A member of UND’s first string quartet, he went on to earn a master’s degree in violin performance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The quartet is a full-time ensemble that performs in Green Bay, Wisc., and Door County during the school year, said Sant’Ana, who is originally from Brazil.
Formed in 2018, the quartet was launched as a collaboration between Midsummer’s Music, the Fine Arts Institute at East High in Green Bay and St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisc. In addition to Sant'Ana, other members are Roy Meyer, violin, Blakeley Menghini, viola, and Ryan Louie, cello.
The ensemble, which has performed at Carnegie Hall and won prestigious music competitions and awards, has been hailed as “four of the finest young professional musicians in the country” by Door County Today.
Tickets for Saturday’s event are $20 for adults. Students may purchase tickets at the door for $10 each. Advance notice is requested to allow for adequate seating.
