Hockey the focus of new book by Grafton author-illustrator
A book signing for "Where I Fly: A Hockey Story," by Kat Allen, is set for noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Ferguson Books and Media at 1720 S. Washington St.
In this book, Allen writes about a child who imagines a future of cheering crowds and successful trick shots as animals peer from the edges of a frozen lake surrounded by a forest lit by northern lights.
The book appeals to hockey players of all ages, Allen said, and is sure to start conversations about young dreams and the family bond formed around the love of hockey.
At Saturday's event, Allen will offer free kids crafts and coloring pages.
Published by Curious Cat Books in Ely, Minn., the book is the first in a series by Allen, called "Play Wild!," and is designed to create excitement for outdoor activities and emphasize building family connections that don't involve screen time, she said.
Originally from Stephen, Minn., Allen grew up with a love for art, writing and the outdoors. She earned a bachelor's degree from Savannah College of Art and Design and studied fine art in Florence, Italy.
Allen lives with her husband and three children near Grafton, N.D., and works as an artist, author and illustrator.
The next book in Allen's series is "Where We Run: A Dog Sledding Story," and a third book about canoeing is planned, said Taylor Okeson, editorial director at Curious Cat Books.
