The exact location of the Empire Ice Thickness Challenge will be announced at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, on the Empire Arts Center Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.

Employees of the event sponsor, the AE2S company, will drill a hole and measure the ice thickness on the Red River at noon Friday. The exact location has not been disclosed, only that it is somewhere between the “point” and the Kennedy Bridge.

The Ice Thickness Challenge is a 50/50 game, with proceeds being split between winner/s and the Empire.

Predictions, at $20 each, are available for purchase through Eventbrite until 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, and can be accessed through the Empire’s website, or the Empire Arts Center Facebook page.

Each contestant can purchase multiple thickness predictions, which range from 15 to 40 inches, in increments of .2 inches. The 25-inch range of thickness predictions is based on typical ice thickness levels of the Red River in Grand Forks in February, said Debra Pflughoeft-Hassett, Empire Arts Center's executive director.
