Hillsboro poker player wins big in Las Vegas tourney
Bob Tweten of Hillsboro, N.D., recently outwitted 230 other poker players to win a $25,000 cash prize at the Free Poker Network's Cash King promotion in Las Vegas.
Tweten represented Grand Forks' El Roco Lounge in the final tournament, the culmination of a six-month promotional poker league contest.
Almost 10,000 players participated in the contest in more than 200 bars and restaurants around the country.
Winning the top prize "was nice; it was unbelievable," Tweten said. "You never enter a tournament thinking you're going to win."
Tweten said he's been playing poker weekly at the El Roco for about six years.
He doesn't have any specific plans for his recent financial windfall, he said.
"I put it in the bank and haven't thought about it much," said Tweten, who works with his nephew on a farm near Hillsboro. "I just enjoy playing—the money is a bonus."
Jim Paskett of Grand Forks, who also represented the El Roco, was among the top 30 winners at the tournament; he placed 22nd and won $200.
This was the second time Tweten has qualified for the national tournament.
