Check your bank account -- direct payments are rolling out

North Dakotans can start checking their bank accounts for government stimulus money, as the payments have begun rolling out.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the first round of payments began on April 11, and people who have filed 2018 and 2019 taxes with direct deposit information, about 60 million people, should be receiving them this week.

The second wave of direct payments will be for those collecting Social Security via direct deposit, which is about 99% of all recipients. The third round will happen in early May, when the IRS will mail checks to people in reverse order of adjusted gross income, with the lowest coming first -- about 5 million people.

Single tax filers are eligible for $1,200, and married couples for $2,400, with an extra $500 per child age 17 or younger. The money comes from the $2 trillion relief package passed by Congress at the end of March and provides more than $500 billion in direct payments to Americans.

Those not on Social Security and who have not filed taxes for 2018-19 or who don’t need to file taxes should visit irs.gov and click the link for nonfilers. If you are waiting for a paper check and would like to expedite it, click the “Get My Payment” link, where direct deposit information can be entered. One thing to note -- once a check has been scheduled to be mailed, a person may not change it to direct deposit.
