Expect lots of family fun tomorrow, July 4, at the Sertoma 4th of July Festival and Fireworks display, being held at a new location this year.

The festival, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., will be held east of Ulland Softball Field and west of South Middle School at 2175 47th Ave. South, between the school and the park.

"I think change is good; we had it there in years past, before the development down there," said Sertoma Club of Greater Grand Forks Secretary Kay Derry. "We really had no choice with the construction downtown, and it's a bigger area. There'd be a lot of parking places, people can walk and play in the park there and do lots of things, so we're pretty excited about it.”

The main event of the day, the Sertoma fireworks display is at 10:30 p.m., across the street, north of South Middle School.

"I think it's going to be a great event and the weather looks like it's going to hold up, too, so we're pretty excited about that," Derry said.

The Sertoma Kiddie parade, a chance for kids to show their patriotism, takes place in the morning. Line up for the kids is at 11 a.m. on the north side of South Middle School for an 11:45 a.m. start. All families are welcome with prizes to be given away.

The Sertoma Club is doing a raffle again this year with proceeds to be split between the Sunshine House and an intended splash park set to be built next to Ali’s Boundless Playground, located inside Sertoma Park. The Sunshine House is offered at a discounted to families who have extended hospital stays. Raffle tickets are available at the Sertoma of Greater Grand Forks’ homepage or Thursday at the festival.

Other activities include face painting, a puppet show, a magic show, games for kids and food vendors. The Firehall Theater also will have a puppet show on the main stage at 12:45 p.m.

Also Thursday is the Altru YMCA Firecracker 10K run and 5K run/walk set for 8 a.m. The starting point is downtown off DeMers Avenue, kitty-corner from the Town Square, just inside the floodwall, before the Sorlie bridge to East Grand Forks, on the north side of the road.

Registration for the run is available until 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Prizes will be awarded to the female and male 10K and 5K top finishers as well as female and male finishers in their age groups.

The annual 4th of July Firecracker Golf Tournament at King's Walk Golf Course starts at 7:30 a.m. and continues until 12:30 p.m. Registration is from 7 to 8 a.m. or until registration is full at 60 teams . King's Walk members sign up for $40 with non-members signing up for $50. Plenty of prizes are available from a round of golf to merchandise, and a big prize payout.

Celebration is in the air today, but remember that fireworks, such as firecrackers and bottle rockets, are not allowed in the Grand Forks and East Grand Forks city limits. Anything that flies or makes a bang is prohibited. Fountains and sprinklers are just fine.
