American border officials announced today that travelers are temporarily banned from bringing whole tomatoes and peppers from Canada into the U.S.
The U.S. government instituted the ban because Canada imports tomatoes and peppers from countries that have been affected by pests - namely, false codling moth and tomato leafminer - that could damage American crops, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said today.
The agency said travelers can bring in sliced tomatoes and peppers from Canada after they are inspected.
The ban began June 21 and will be in effect until further notice.
