Q . How did Trojan Promotions get its start?
A. In 1990, I began working at my dad’s startup business forms company, Nelson Business Forms. I created a division that focused on advertising specialties, which was growing quickly in the business-to-business market. As more “corporate casual” work attire grew in popularity over suits and ties, we began offering custom-decorated apparel. In 2007, my wife Jessica and I did a spin-off and Nelson Specialties became its own corporate entity. We had a new location and needed a new name and logo. We liked the legend of the ancient city of Troy as a way of telling a story about powerful promotional products. The imagery of the Trojan Horse, which was a gift, (as advertising products often are) was a concrete symbol in a logo. The cadence of Trojan Promotions worked well, and honestly, the name is pretty memorable.
Q . What's the advantage for a business to buy promotional products? Increased exposure?
A. Promotional products accomplish many different things than other forms of marketing. They build loyalty, say “thank you,” and provide more longevity than other advertising. They live in your car, on your desk or in your home. Custom-decorated apparel lets people show they are a part of something they care about. Why else do we wear team apparel? It helps companies to create a branded look for their employees.
Q. What do you specialize in?
A. We specialize in excellence and professionalism in this business. There are literally a million products in this industry to sell clients. However, we want our clients to achieve their marketing goals with quality products, all the while having an excellent experience with our team. This year, we vertically integrated a part of the production process. We bought two new industrial embroidery machines and expanded our operation so that we could better control factors like quality and meeting deadlines.
Q . How have you seen the business or the industry change over the years?
A. When I first started, the selection of hard goods and clothing was pretty basic. Women’s apparel and accessories have become more fashion-forward. We offer a wide variety of retail brands like Nike, Under Armour, Brookstone and Isaaac Mizrahi. Some of our clients want to align themselves with this level of brand recognition.
