Smith named director of UND's Engineered Surfaces Center

UND's School of Engineering and Mines on Thursday named Charles H. Smith as the director of the school's Engineered Surfaces Center, a decision effective Monday.

UND's School of Engineering and Mines on Thursday named Charles H. Smith as the director of the school's Engineered Surfaces Center, a decision effective Monday.

Smith earned a doctorate in materials science and engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his master's in metallurgy from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Smith co-founded Biotronics Inc. in 2009, a startup focused on commercializing cost-effective microelectromagnetic systems transducers for harsh environments. He previously served as vice president of operations at Meggitt Sensing Systems.

He's held positions at General Electric and was director of business development and science and technology at PPG Industries, in addition to teaching at California Miramar University.

Mike Mann, chairman of the UND Department of Chemical Engineering, had been directing the Engineered Surfaces Center on an interim basis.
