LAKEVILLE, Minn. — Good news for Grape-Nuts fans: The crunchy cereal is back on store shelves.

Lakeville-based Post Consumer Brands said last week it has resumed shipping the cereal at full capacity to stores nationwide following a pandemic-related shortage that sent prices soaring to as much as $110 a box through an online black market.

More good news: The cereal-maker says it will reimburse eligible consumers who paid jacked-up prices.

“It became abundantly clear during the shortage that Grape-Nuts fans are ‘Nuts for Grape-Nuts,’” Kristin DeRock, Grape-Nuts brand manager at Post Consumer Brands, said in a company statement. “So much so that some of our loyal super fans were willing to pay extreme prices just to ensure they wouldn’t be without their favorite crunchy cereal. As a way to show our appreciation and thank these fans for their dedication, we want to repay the love by reimbursing them.”

Consumers who paid $10 or more for a box of Grape-Nuts between Nov. 1, 2020, and March 15, 2021, are eligible to submit a valid retailer or e-retailer receipt for a partial refund of up to $115 to help cover the difference between the amount paid and the suggested retail price. They can submit receipts through April 15 by going to postconsumerbrands.com.

The shortage was driven by supply constraints and a higher demand for cereal amid the pandemic, a Post spokesperson said Thursday, March 25. Grape-Nuts is made in just one of Post’s facilities using a proprietary technology and production process that isn’t easily replicated, so production couldn’t be shifted elsewhere to meet demand.

Developed by C.W. Post in 1897, Grape-Nuts is a “timeless and versatile staple that has been a part of active and healthy lifestyles for nearly 125 years,” Post’s website says.

Post Consumer Brands is the third-largest cereal company in the U.S. with a portfolio of brands that includes Alpha-Bits, Honey Bunches of Oats, Honey-Comb, Raisin Bran, Malt-o-Meal, Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles.
