Plaza Jewelers to close on Christmas Eve

A Grand Forks jewelry store will soon close its doors after a quarter-century in business, but the owners will keep busy by continuing to operate a jewelry repair shop in the same location.

Co-owner Mary Klinicke said Plaza Jewelers, 1521 24th Ave. S., will close for good at the end of the business day on Christmas Eve.

Klinicke and her husband, Hilary, made the decision to close earlier this year, but she said the decision wasn't for any specific reason.

"It was just that we're getting older," she said. "We're just kind of cutting back a lot so that it's a little easier for us to handle."

But the Klinickes will still be involved in the jewelry business after the store closes -- and their newest venture will be in the same location as Plaza Jewelers. The store's repair shop will remain open under the name K & J Jewelers, which is the same name of Hilary's repair shop he operated for about 10 years before Plaza Jewelers opened in the 1980s.

Klinicke said the store will be "a lot smaller" after the change and won't have the showroom displaying jewelry anymore. K & J will offer jewelry repair and designing, and she said the store can still special order jewelry for customers.

Klinicke said she hopes the change will give her and Hilary some more free time, but she's looking forward to continuing to work with the customers she's gotten to know over the years.

"I don't think we're going to get a chance to be really lonesome," she said. "We hope to serve these people yet."
