Hatton, N.D., has new housing development

The 5-acre development, called Bernie’s Addition, is on the northwest side of Hatton near the city’s softball field.

HATTON, N.D. – A new development in Hatton will provide much-needed land for construction of new homes, said Jim Murphy, Traill County Economic Development Commission executive director.

The 5-acre development, called Bernie’s Addition, is on the northwest side of Hatton near the city’s softball field. The new addition is named in honor of Bernie Johnson, who has served the city of Hatton for more than 40 years. Johnson is a City Council member and volunteer firefighter.

“The Traill County EDC is super excited for Hatton, and the great opportunity it means for Hatton and Traill County,” Murphy said.

The five Bernie’s Addition lots, which are from 0.44 to 0.55 of an acre, are located next to a street and have water and sewer. The back of the lot features a shelterbelt of trees, and on the other side of the trees is the previous newest housing development.

The Bernie's Addition development project is a partnership between the city of Hatton, the Hatton Economic Development Corporation and Naastad Brothers, an excavating company in Hatton. The lots are selling for about $15,500, said Kallie Naastad, Naastad Brothers chief financial officer and a member of the Hatton EDC.

There has been no land available to build a home in Hatton during the past several years, and people who have inquired about building there have been turned away.

“Over the course of the past five years, there have been several people interested in moving to Hatton, but there have been no lots,” she said. “Hatton is a good rural community to raise your family. We have a good school system. We just put in new roads. Your cost of living is significantly lower.”
