The former Hardee’s building at 1750 S. Columbia Rd. will now be the home of a new drive-thru car wash.

According to David Elliott, a construction manager with Atlanta, Ga.-based Project Builders, construction on the Tidal Wave Car Wash will take about five months. Demolition work began last week, and the Hardee’s building has been torn down and site preparation work is ongoing.

The car wash is owned by Thomaston, Ga.-based Tidal Wave Auto Spa, a company with dozens of car washes across several states, with the nearest being located in Rapid City, S.D. Grand Forks County property records show the location changed hands on April 15, though Ryan Brooks, deputy city planner, said the project has been underway for some time.

“It's been a little bit,” said Brooks. “Then we had that pandemic come through, and I want to say that we started working with them prior to that.”

Brooks added the company became interested in the location because its footprint meets their needs in terms of access.

Elliott told the Herald his company will oversee the project, and most of the construction work will be done by local contractors, though some specialty staff may come to North Dakota for the finishing touches.

Hardee’s closed its doors in early July 2020.
