Locally made wine is now available near East Grand Forks.

The tasting room at the Grape Mill Vineyard and Winery opened about a month ago, said Russ Halverson, who runs the operation with his wife, Gail, and son, Matt. It's located at 18696 430th Ave. S.W., just off of Bygland Road Southeast, about a mile from Central Middle School.

Russ Halverson said they haven't done much marketing yet, but word of mouth is spreading.

"It's getting busier all the time," he said. "We've got a lot of special events already booked up, like birthdays and bridal showers."

The Halversons planted 200 vines in 2006 and now have more than 1,600, according to their website. Russ Halverson said they just got their farm winery license in April.

"All the wines that we make are from cold-climate grapes, grown right on our vineyard here right next to the winery," he said.

The winery is open from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
