DEVILS LAKE -- A newspaper that covers the Devils Lake region has been redesigned.
This week, the Devils Lake Journal started printing on a 22-inch web, narrowing the width of its paper from 25 inches. It’s a change General Manager J. Reed Anderson announced in May.
Founded in 1906, the five-day paper has gone through several changes to adapt to a changing industry, Anderson said in an editorial Monday. He cited the cost of shipping larger rolls and printing capability, adding there’s no facility in the area that could print the paper if its printing press go down.
“Sure, the industry is changing, has changed. But what industry isn't?” he wrote. “It's how we adapt to change that matters.”

The paper also is redesigning its layout, with the most noticeable change on the cover. The banner graphic has been reduced but has more color. The font of the paper’s title has changed, and the image of a goose flying over a lake has been formatted into a circular emblem.
“There will be refinements in the coming weeks, but the objective is a paper that each day you can find what you're looking for easily and always where you expect to find it,” Anderson wrote.
Anderson wrote in May the changes should not suggest the commitment of the paper to its readers is shrinking.
The Journal is the only North Dakota paper owned by GateHouse Media, a New York state-based company that owns 130 daily newspapers and more than 600 community publications, according to its website.
Anderson did not return a message left by the Herald seeking comment.
