Q: What is the origin of the name?

A: We have been open a little over a year. We had our one-year birthday on Nov. 13. We both wanted to go into business together because we both had the same dream and the same passion. And we both really love fashion, and we like making women feel good. Betty is my grandma's name, and she lives here in Thief River. She's always been a fashionista and has always looked so nice, so we came up with Total Betty. I don't know if you've seen (the movie) "Clueless," but a woman who has it all is a “Total Betty.” She's the ultimate package, so we kind of put the two together.

Q: How is business going?

A: Business is going good. Thief River definitely needed more retail. So I think we've kind of filled that void a little bit as best as we can. Christmas was really good. We met with the Score office in Grand Forks. And we had a business plan and, and all of that, and then we met with our bank. We just kind of figured it out and did it on our own.

Q: Tell us about your shop. What's the concept here?

A: Total Betty is a women's boutique. We have clothing in sizes small through 3X. We have accessories, jewelry, and we have some home goods stuff. We just like to cater to women no matter what size you are, and we just want them to come in and have that fun experience of shopping in a brick and mortar store. We have Catherine Howard, she has Howard Soap Company. She's based out of Mcintosh, Minn. We have her candles, her room sprays, some beauty products and lotions.

Q: Who are your customers, and where do they come from?

A: Our customers, I would say are from high schoolers to grandmas. We have from age 16 to age 88. My grandma even shops here. We like to cater to any kind of woman, mom or daughter or grandma. We have quite a few (customers) that come from surrounding areas. We've had people travel here from Fargo, Grand Forks; we get a lot from Northern Minnesota. So it's really cool that surrounding communities come to check Total Betty out.

Q: Where would you like to see your business in five years?

A: I would love to see it maybe expand into a bigger location and add children's clothing, maybe men's. Maybe more special gifts. I don't know, I guess just grow as a whole. And yeah, a bigger location would be really nice.
