Q. How did Spare Husband get its start?

A. We started Spare Husband because we were looking for a way to earn extra money in the wintertime when we were farming. Ron started the business when I (Ken) was finishing up college. He was looking for something to do where he could stay self-employed. We had always fixed things before and worked in our wood shop in the winter so we thought it was a good fit. We put an ad in the paper and within a couple days we were booked out a couple of weeks. We eventually decided to stop farming and work Spare Husband full time.

Q. What kind of services do you provide?

A. We provide services of all sorts. We do most general home repairs and take care of the honey do list. We do everything from hanging blinds and changing light bulbs to complete bath remodels and everything in between. Sheetrock repairs, shingle repairs, tiling, laminate floors, to windows and doors.

Q. How have you seen the business change or grow over the years?

A. Over the years the business has grown very much. We now have three pickups going and have purchased our shop in town. When we first started we had no expectations about how business would be and never thought it would develop as it did. We usually have a full schedule and have a couple months worth of work at least on the books at all times. We are currently looking for more employees to help with the workload.

Q. Is there more of a demand for your services with the growth in housing in the Grand Forks area?

A. The growth in Grand Forks does affect our business. We don't do very much in new homes right away but it does lead to future projects. Also, when the home builders and larger contractors are busy building they usually are unable to do the smaller jobs and that is our specialty. So I believe that indirectly the growth in town down affect our business.
