FARGO - The chairman of the last attempt to get marijuana legalized for medical use in North Dakota says he can't get fired up about leading another effort anytime soon, even as the debate promises to light up the Minnesota Legislature in February. Steve Zaiser, a Democratic state representative for Fargo's District 21, said the 2012 attempt, which was ended by a petition-signature fraud scandal, left him burned out. "I have no intent on doing that," Zaiser said.
INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - Indiana lawmakers on Wednesday took a step closer toward putting a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage before voters in November, potentially bucking a U.S. trend of states, courts and voters making gay nuptials legal. The state House elections committee voted 9-3 along party lines to advance the proposed amendment and a companion bill to a vote of the full House.

ST. PAUL -- Long lines at U.S. polling places could be shortened if state and local governments take actions such as allowing early voting and online voter registration, a presidential commission said Wednesday. Good ideas, Deputy Minnesota Secretary of State Beth Fraser said, adding that Minnesota already is making progress in key areas. Secretary of State Mark Ritchie implemented online voter registration last year, although Republican legislators, and some Democrats, say he should have received their approval before it launched.
FARGO -- North Dakota has made impressive gains in climbing up the ladder of millionaires per capita. A new report shows North Dakota jumped 14 slots - the biggest rise of any state - in the rankings for 2013 by Phoenix Marketing International. The Flickertail State ranked 29th, a bit below the middle of the pack, in the ratio of millionaires to total households.
The company behind a chemical spill that left about 300,000 people in West Virginia without tap water failed to disclose a second chemical in the leak, state officials said on Wednesday. The company, Freedom Industries, had previously said that only one chemical, crude MCHM, had spilled from one of its storage tanks into the Elk River at Charleston on January 9.
