DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — A former worker at a Detroit Lakes group home has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping a woman resident with the mental capacity of a young child. Jallah Sallah Kollie, 39, of 219 Second Ave. W., West Fargo, was sentenced Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Becker County District Court on felony counts of first- and third-degree criminal sexual conduct-victim mentally impaired.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — A Detroit Lakes veteran is hopeful he may be allowed to stay in his rented home after all. Brian Fraser, 59, says he and his landlord, Laurel Carlson, have found several witnesses to help make their case that the house at 327 Elizabeth St. should be "grandfathered-in" because it was being used as a rental unit before a 1968 city zoning ordinance.
The new White Earth-owned Star Lake Casino near Dent could be the catalyst for developing the Star Lake, Dead Lake and Mud Lake area in Otter Tail County. The tribe is moving forward on plans to build a 30,000-square-foot casino with 180 hotel rooms, convention space, a 15-stall RV park, three restaurants and other amenities on trust land on Star Lake, which sits between Dent and Maplewood State Park. The casino would sit on 15 acres of trust land and another 225 acres of "fee land" that has been purchased by the tribe.
WHITE EARTH, Minn. -- Longtime activist Winona LaDuke plans to run for White Earth tribal chairwoman at the next opportunity, and says there are four key issues to her campaign. "I've worked nationally trying to do my best for a lot of years," she said. "Now's the time to step forward -- our tribe needs to flourish." Her No. 1 priority is to improve the tribal economy.
