Public transportation in the Grand Forks area is "dumping the pump" Thursday. The Cities Area Transit in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks will join other public transportation systems nationwide for National Dump the Pump Day. On Thursday, residents in both cities will be able to ride the city bus for free. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association, Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride city buses instead of driving vehicles. THIEF RIVER FALLS—A house fire displaced multiple families early Friday morning in Thief River Falls. Firefighters responded at 1:44 a.m. to the blaze in the 500 block of Knight Avenue North. Residents in the basement and main floor escaped the house, which had been turned into apartment units, said Rick Beier, a training officer with the Thief River Falls Fire Department. Firefighters returned from the fire around 5 a.m.
Law enforcement are investigating a death Friday evening near the Amtrak station in Grand Forks. Police were called around 6 p.m. to the railroad tracks that cross DeMers Avenue near North 55th Street for a welfare check. A train was blocking DeMers Avenue as Grand Forks police secured the area.

A mayoral debate, hosted by the Grand Forks Herald at the Empire Arts Center, pitted incumbent Mike Brown against his challenger, City Council member Terry Bjerke.
