In a game of big plays, even a big lineman got into the scoring act Tuesday for Polk County West. The Thunder rolled up 411 yards in total offense in beating Lake of the Woods 54-16 in a quarterfinal game in the Minnesota Section 8A high school football playoffs at Senior High Field. Polk County West scored eight touchdowns. One of them was by 270-pound senior Dyllon McLean, a fourth-year starting offensive lineman. He got two carries—the first for five yards to the LOW 8-yard line, then scoring from there on the next play.
JAMESTOWN, N.D.—All season long, Hillsboro-Central Valley was ranked first in the North Dakota Class B girls cross country coaches' poll. Reagan Baesler was ranked No. 1 individually. That was no big deal to Baesler, the Burros' standout freshman. "It wasn't a lot of pressure, maybe just a little,'' Baesler said. "I didn't really pay attention to it. I just went out and ran my races.''
BISMARCK—The North Dakota High School Activities Association's board of directors approved football alignments for the 2017 and 2018 seasons at their board meeting here Wednesday morning. The big change will be in Class AA, where the number of teams will drop from 16 teams to 10 with one statewide schedule. The top six teams in the standings will advance to the state playoffs. Class AAA will have two regions, with the top four from each division qualifying for state playoffs.

Jakob Olson threw five touchdown passes Friday, leading Bismarck Century past Grand Forks Red River 43-14 in the high school season opener for both teams at Cushman Field. Olson finished 11-of-18 passing for 248 yards in his first varsity start. Trey Pajimula rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown for the defending Class AAA state champion Patriots.

Longtime Grand Forks Central High School boys basketball coach Dick Vinger died Saturday at Grand Forks' Altru Hospital. Vinger, who was Central's head boys basketball coach for 18 seasons, was 86. As a boys high school basketball coach, Vinger won three North Dakota Class A state titles, the final two while at Central.
Paxton Pierce is pitching to a very respectable 3.00 earned run average. With the effectiveness of the Roseau American Legion baseball team's pitching staff, that 3.00 is hurting the team's overall ERA. Roseau is off to a 7-3 start behind the formula of good pitching and defense. Roseau has a 2.82 team earned run average and a .935 team fielding percentage. Pierce's earned run average "is a good number for an effective pitcher on any team,'' Roseau coach Josh Weckman said. "We've done a phenomenal job on the mound so far.
