LAKE SHORE, Minn. - A runabout boat was destroyed by fire in the Gull Lake Narrows in Lake Shore Wednesday night. Nisswa Fire Chief Richard Geike said the boat owner was stopping to get gas when he noticed the fire. The man jumped off the boat and swam to shore about 100 feet away. Submitted video by Mike Luker
WASHINGTON, D.C.—A federal judge here won't issuing his ruling for more than two weeks after a hearing Wednesday, Aug. 24, in a lawsuit seeking to halt construction of a $3.8 billion pipeline to haul North Dakota oil. Judge James E. Boasberg has taken the matter under advisement and set a status conference for Sept. 14, according to online court records. Boasberg indicated after the hearing that he'll issue his ruling after Labor Day, according to multiple media reports.

BRAINERD, Minn.—Zachary Todd Anderson, 25, Coon Rapids, s expected to make his first court appearance by noon Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Cass County District Court in Walker for the murder and kidnapping of a 5-year-old Watkins girl. He remains in custody in the Crow Wing County Jail in Brainerd on probable cause murder and kidnapping. Anderson was taken to the Brainerd jail due to space issues at the Cass County Jail, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported.
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota will remember Gen. John William Vessey Jr. on Thursday, Aug. 25, as Gov. Mark Dayton ordered flags to be flown at half-staff. Vessey, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died Aug. 18 at age 94. The Minneapolis native had a highly decorated 46 years in the military. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.
MELROSE TOWNSHIP, Minn. -- Divers recovered the body of a missing boater on Monday, a day after a 47-year-old Meire Grove man was thrown from the watercraft. Dale Urban Steinemann was in the boat with his girlfriend’s two sons, ages 10 and 7. The boys were reportedly wearing life vests and were not hurt in the accident, said the Stearns County Sheriff's Office in a press release.
TURTLE LAKE, N.D. -- A 19-year-old driver is dead and his passenger injured after a pickup they were in overturned and became partially submerged in a canal north of Turtle Lake early Sunday morning. Around 2:45 a.m., the driver, Cole Kuschel of Garrison, lost control of the vehicle on McClusky Canal Road, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said. The pickup went into the canal embankment and ejected the driver as it rolled.
