Police are backing away from earlier assertions the public is not in danger following last Tuesday’s discovery of the body of homicide victim Thomas Bearson. “We don’t have answers,” said Moorhead police Lt. Tory Jacobson, pointing out police are still struggling to identify a killer and a motive. The friend, who called police April 9 after the baby became lethargic and almost stopped breathing, said the boy’s mother, Donna Marie Langstaff, 32, dropped him off earlier that day because she could not handle the baby. Langstaff was having a hard time with substance abuse and “just wanted to party” and needed a break, the friend told police. The 4-week-old baby boy was pale, listless and sleepy when Langstaff dropped him off, the friend said, but when she called Langstaff to tell her about the child’s condition, Langstaff said the baby had been that way for a while.

Photos of a boy at the heart of the Cass County administrator’s domestic assault trial were admitted into evidence Thursday and showed the child with a swollen, reddened eye injury from what the boy said were punches inflicted by Keith Berndt. Moorhead police Detective Seth Saarinen testified that the black eye was visible when he interviewed the boy two days after Berndt, the boyfriend of the boy’s mother, allegedly assaulted him on Feb. 2. The boy’s mother took the stand Thursday to say she’d noticed nothing unusual the night of the alleged assault and didn’t notice the injury until the morning two days after.

A 14-year-old middle school classmate of the alleged victim in a domestic assault case against a top administrator in Cass County of North Dakota testified Wednesday the boy came to school with a black eye the day after the assault, and told him his “stepfather” had done it. Keith Berndt, 58, who is dating the boy’s mother, is on trial on fifth-degree misdemeanor domestic assault charges in the Feb. 2 case. Prosecutors allege Berndt punched, kneed and slammed the boy’s head into the floor, then dropped two 40-pound weights on his chest, after first shoving him into a bed so hard the headboard broke. The alleged assault happened after a Super Bowl party at the boy’s shared home with his mother and Berndt.
