He graduated with honors from Moorhead State University with a degree in mass communications, print journalism. He interned at the Echo Press in the summer of 1983 and was hired a year later as a sports reporter. He also worked as a news reporter/photographer. Al is a four-time winner of the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Herman Roe Award, which honors excellence in editorial writing.

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- A fisherman’s body was pulled Lake Andrew two miles south of Alexandria on Monday night. At 8:22 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a report of an empty boat floating on Lake Andrew. Deputies and the dive team responded, as well as LifeLink helicopter and the Forada First Responders. Deputies learned the owner of the boat left to go fishing at about 3:30 p.m., but did not return as scheduled at 5:30 p.m.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified the man who drowned in Lake Miltona Saturday afternoon as Scott A. Gagner, 55, of Miltona. The sheriff's office received a 911 call at 4:34 p.m. about Gagner, who went overboard on the west side of the lake and hadn't re-surfaced. The location where Gagner was last seen was marked by GPS and the sheriff's office dive team began search efforts.
Three family members were seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash north of Alexandria on Memorial Day Monday afternoon. The crash happened on Highway 29 near Maple Way NE at about 12:30 p.m. Christopher Doering, 26, of Alexandria was driving a 2004 Ford Freestar south on Highway 29 when the vehicle veered to the left, went off the road and ended up in the east ditch, according to the State Patrol. The airbags were deployed.
A bill to strengthen penalties for interfering with the body or scene of a death passed the Minnesota House without opposition Thursday, 124-0. Authored by Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, the bill known as "Laura's Law" is directed toward crimes similar those involving 18-year-old victim Laura Schwendemann of Starbuck. Schwendemann's body was found in a Douglas County corn field 12 days after she was reported missing last fall.

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. - Sheriff's deputies and a good Samaritan helped rescue five young men after their boat sank on a lake in western Minnesota over the weekend. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a boater on Lake Carlos, near Alexandria, at 12:17 a.m. Sunday reporting a boat sunk near the mouth of the Long Prairie River. The caller reported there were five occupants on board and all were accounted for, but they were in the water.
