Nathan Lafleur of Devils Lake released this massive northern pike Wednesday evening on Devils Lake. Lafleur, who caught the fish on a fly rod, said the pike measured 51.5 inches. He says he never considered keeping the fish, even though it was longer than the state record pike, a 48-inch, 37-pound, 8-ounce pike caught in 1968 on Lake Sakakawea. (Submitted photo)

Owls were elusive Monday night during an attempted banding effort at Turtle River State Park, but Tim Driscoll and Erika Kolbow trapped and banded this bright-eyed little saw-whet owl March 26. Based on previous experience in the park, fall is the most productive time to band saw-whet owls, Kolbow and Driscoll say. (Erika Kolbow, Turtle River State Park)
