Schlossman: Big weekend for Grand Forks guys

Five games of note around college hockey:

1. Providence scored a buzzer-beater with less than one second left — 0:00.9 to be exact — to sweep Miami in Oxford. Kasper Bjorkqvist scored the winner. The Friars did a great job defensively against Miami’s top players. Kiefer Sherwood, Josh Melnick, Carson Meyer, Gordie Green and Louie Belpedio were all held without a point on the weekend.

2. What a start to the Joe Shawhan era at Michigan Tech. The Huskies knocked off Minnesota Duluth 4-3 on Saturday to win the Ice Breaker Invitational and start the season with two big nonconference wins against Union and the Bulldogs. Here’s the story from our sister paper.

3. Grand Forks native Grant Potulny earned his first win as head coach at Northern Michigan. Potulny’s Wildcats beat Lake Superior State. Senior forward Robbie Payne is off to a huge start with four goals in two games.
