WOMEN'S HOCKEY: UND swept by Ohio State after 3-1 loss

It is expected to be back at full strength next weekend.

Playing shorthanded for the last month during the Olympics, UND went 1-6-1 — a stretch capped by a 3-1 loss at Ohio State on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the Olympic break, UND was 16-5-3.

On Saturday, UND jumped out to a 1-0 lead on first-period a goal by Amy Menke, but couldn’t add to it. The Buckeyes tied the game late in the first and scored a pair of third-period goals to finish off their first sweep of UND in five years.

UND has now lost four straight games — its longest losing streak since January 2010.

This weekend, UND returns home for the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. UND will have the No. 3 seed and host Bemidji State. It will be the third time in four years that UND has hosted the Beavers in the first round. UND won the previous two.

In order to win that first-round series and get to the WCHA Final Faceoff, it will have to turn things around at home next weekend.

UND is expected to have all three of its Olympians – Michelle Karvinen, Susanna Tapani and Tanja Eisenschmid – back for that series. Karvinen flew straight from Sochi to Columbus to play two games this weekend, but she didn’t register any points.

The Buckeyes earned the No. 5 seed in the playoffs and will travel to Minnesota Duluth for the first round.
