Friends mourn Wyoming men killed in Saturday plane crash near Thief River Falls

WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Ohio State takes WCHA win over UND

COLUMBUS, Ohio — UND regained the services of one of its three Olympians but that still wasn’t enough as Ohio State downed North Dakota 2-0 on Friday night in a WCHA game.

It was UND’s third-straight loss and further damaged its chances of making the eight-team NCAA tournament field next month.

Michelle Karvinen, the top scorer at the Olympic women’s hockey tournament, flew from Sochi to Columbus in time for the game.

But UND couldn’t generate any offense against the Buckeyes despite outshooting Ohio State 32-19.

Ohio State’s Kari Schmitt’s power-play goal at 4:29 of the second period was all the scoring Ohio State would need.

The Buckeyes then got an empty-net goal from Sara Schmitt at 18:49 of the third period.

UND’s Shelby Amsley-Benzie finished with 17 saves for North Dakota.

The teams close out their series today. It will be the regular-season finale for North Dakota.

UND will be at home next weekend for the first round of the WCHA playoffs.
