UND FOOTBALL: UND sets home football game times

UND football tailgaters will have to fire up their grills a little earlier this November.

On Monday, UND released the start times for the 2014 home schedule, including unique noon starts for two November dates in the Alerus Center.

UND will start its two September home games at 6 p.m., its two October home games at 1:30 p.m. and the two November games will be played at noon.

That’s a change from the past for November games, which have typically been played later in the afternoon.

The reason for the move is due to television opportunities and broadcasting rights, UND athletic director Brian Faison said.

ROOT Sports has the national broadcasting rights of all Big Sky games. With noon starts, UND can avoid the broadcasting window for ROOT programming and take advantage of UND’s own national TV agreement with Fox College Sports.

UND coach Bubba Schweigert will make his home head coaching debut in the 49th annual Potato Bowl USA game on Sept. 6 against first-time opponent Robert Morris.

Stony Brook then finishes UND’s non-conference schedule with the Military Appreciation game on Sept. 20. The Seawolves lost to UND in 2009 in Grand Forks.

UND’s Big Sky home slate starts off with back-to-back home games on the first two weekends of October. Montana returns for the third straight season for the Hall of Fame Game on Oct. 4, while Portland State will play a Homecoming game on Oct. 11.

November features another set of back-to-back home weekends for UND with first-time opponent Weber State on Nov. 8 and Northern Arizona on Nov. 15.

UND football fans can purchase tickets now with packages starting at $75. Single-game tickets go on sale Aug. 1.

Early prognostications

The Sporting News has released its preseason FCS polls, predicting UND to finish 12th in the 13-team Big Sky Conference.

The Sporting News ranked the Big Sky: Eastern Washington, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Southern Utah, Sacramento State, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Portland State, Weber State, Idaho State, UND and Northern Colorado.

The Sporting News ranked Eastern Washington No. 1 overall, ahead of No. 2 North Dakota State, the three-time defending FCS champions.

Montana (10), Montana State (18), Northern Arizona (20) and Southern Utah (24) also cracked the FCS top 25.
