WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: UND lands a center from Minnesota

The latest verbal of the 2015 UND women’s basketball recruiting class is also the tallest.

Olivia Hass, a 6-foot-3 center from St. Peter, Minn., gave her verbal commitment this week to play at UND beginning in 2015.

Hass averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks for St. Peter High School, which competes at the Class AA level. St. Peter is 10 miles north of Mankato.

“Olivia is a big, athletic player,” St. Peter coach Bob Southworth said. “She’s physical, and she’s good defensively. She’s a true 6-foot-3, and she can run.”

Hass also played AAU basketball in the Twin Cities area with both North Tartan and Minnesota Fury.

Hass has played varsity basketball for Southworth since her freshman season, when she was a reserve.

Southworth said Hass’ offensive strength is in close to the basket, as she shoots more than 50 percent from the field.

“She has room to improve her offensive game,” Southworth said. “She could move it out a little bit.”

Hass becomes the fifth known verbal of the 2015 class and the fourth player from Minnesota. In Minnesota, she joins point guard Kanani Asuncion of Rochester Century, small forward Sydney Boike of Crookston and guard Jill Morton of Edina. Center Lexi Klabo of Fargo Davies is UND’s lone North Dakota commit.

UND is entering its third season in the Big Sky Conference in 2014-15. In the team’s second year in the league, North Dakota won the Big Sky tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament.

UND faced Texas A&M in College Station in the first round. UND trailed just 30-26 to the host Aggies at halftime before losing 70-55.
