WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Rochester Century guard verbals to UND

Chris Stenzel was the Rochester Century girls basketball coach last season before resigning to become assistant women’s basketball coach at Rochester Community and Technical College.

He’s a little jealous of the UND coaching staff.

That’s because Stenzel’s star player — 5-foot-10 Kanani Asuncion — has given a verbal commitment to North Dakota.

“She’s a coach’s dream,” Stenzel said. “I can’t say enough good things about her. She started for me since she was an eighth-grader.”

Asuncion, a junior last winter, averaged about 15 points and 8 rebounds per game last season for Rochester Century.

As an eighth-grader, Asuncion was all-conference honorable mention. Each year after that, she’s been a unanimous selection to the all-conference team.

She’s scored more than 1,000 points in her career.

Asuncion joins 6-foot-2 center Lexi Klabo of Fargo Davies and 5-foot-10 guard Jill Morton of Edina as UND’s early 2015 recruiting class.

Before breaking down her basketball skills, Stenzel stressed Asuncion’s character.

“I don’t know if you can find a nicer person,” he said. “She’s a great individual. She’s the type of person you love to have as a coach because you don’t have to worry about her academically or doing anything wrong.”

As far as strengths on the court, Stenzel says Asuncion has a rare mid-range game.

“She’s very athletic, quick and can jump out of the gym,” Stenzel said. “She has a beautiful pull-up jump shot, which is kind of lost in today’s game. She’s a very smart player and makes good decisions.”
