MEN'S BASKETBALL: UND heads back to the Tournament

The UND men’s basketball team’s seven seniors aren’t done with their college careers quite yet.

UND is headed to the Tournament for the fourth straight year.

North Dakota, which lost to Weber State in the Big Sky Conference championship game last Saturday, will play Nebraska Omaha in Omaha in the first round of the tournament Wednesday at 7 p.m.

“We are excited about receiving a bid to the CIT and our fourth straight postseason experience,” UND men’s basketball coach Brian Jones said. “This is a special time for our seniors who have cemented their legacy. We are excited to extend our season.”

The Mavericks are 16-14 overall and 5-9 in the Summit League. Omaha is 10-4 at home.

Omaha is led by a pair of all-Summit honorable mention selections in junior guard CJ Carter and senior center John Karhoff. Carter averages 13.9 points per game, while Karhoff averages 13.1.

Omaha and UND last met on Feb. 23, 2013, in the ESPN BracketBusters series at Ralston Arena. Omaha won 83-75.

The Mavericks have won the last five meetings with UND.

North Dakota hasn’t won in the first round of the CIT. UND has lost to Air Force (2011), Drake (2012) and Northern Iowa (2013).

The 32-team field begins first round play Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The tournament is re-seeded after the first round.
