Area hockey players headline USHL draft

Others took notice.

Kyle Sylvester, one member of that line, was selected No. 1 overall in the United States Hockey League Phase II draft on Tuesday by the Fargo Force. Sylvester, a senior, racked up 90 points in 28 games this season.

His linemate, Kobe Roth, also was selected in the fourth round by the Des Moines Buccaneers. Roth, who has committed to Minnesota Duluth, had 91 points this season.

The third member of that line, Jared Bethune, previously was drafted by the Lincoln Stars.

The Warroad players headlined a strong draft day for local players.

Grand Forks Central captain Casey Johnson was selected in the third round by the expansion Madison Capitols. Johnson, a senior defenseman, led Central in scoring with 32 points in 27 games.

A pair of players who led East Grand Forks Senior High to the state championship also were picked. Junior forward Dixon Bowen went to the Fargo Force in the seventh round, while senior defenseman Eddie Eades was selected by Sioux Falls in the 12th.

Grand Forks native Spencer Kuhlman, a defenseman who plays at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, was selected by the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the seventh round.

Two other Minnesota Section 8 players also were selected with Warroad defenseman Luke Jaycox going to the Lincoln Stars in the 12th round and Roseau forward Alex Strand going to Sioux City in the 23rd round. Strand’s linemate, Zach Yon, signed a tender to play with the Fargo Force on Monday.
