Red River knocked out in state softball qualifier

FARGO—Valley City's Hailey Schaefer didn't just take care of business on the mound.

The Hi-Liner softball pitcher tossed a complete game and had a pair of hits and two runs batted in to lead Valley City to a 7-2 win over Grand Forks Red River in a state-qualifying game Saturday in Fargo.

Red River's season ended with a 15-15 record.

The Roughriders received three hits from Gabrielle Nuelle and an RBI single from Haylie Kinneberg in the loss.

Valley City had 11 hits in the game, led by Becca Thompson and Kacee White, who both went 3-for-4. Emily Murray had a pair of sac fly RBIs, while the Hi-Liners also took advantage of Red River errors.

The Roughriders made five errors in the game, including three in the third inning.

Valley City and West Fargo Sheyenne earned spots in the state tournament along with West Fargo and Fargo North.

West Fargo beat Fargo North 2-1 to win the East Region title on Saturday.
