Greater Grand Forks girls track at a glance

EGF Senior High

Coach: Liesa Hanson.

2013 results: The Green Wave finished third in the subsection meet and eighth in the Section 8A meet.

Key graduation losses:

Returning subsection/section placers: Sr. Karly Nelson (2nd at subsection/3rd at section in shot put and discus), soph. Erica Eades (subsection and section 800 champion), fr. Ponny White (4th at subsection/7th at section in 200), sr. Alex Arroyo (4th at subsection/6th at section in triple jump), 8th-grader Tiffany Hanson (5th at subsection in 100, 5th at subsection in pole vault), soph. Rachel Jenson (5th at subsection in 800), 8th-grader Grace Beck (5th at subsection in 3,200), soph. Rylee Skyberg (relays), soph. Tessa Hanson (relays), soph. Leah Pesch (relays).

Other returning high scorers: Soph. Aletta Anderson (sprints-hurdles), jr. Allison Pritchett (high jump).

Potential new impact scorers: Sr. Coco Piche.

Coach Hanson says: “We have good quality runners with five girls back (Eades in 800 and Eades, Jenson, Skyberg, Pesch and Tessa Hanson in relays) who ran at state last year. Those are our strongest runners. They’ve done well in their careers. And Karly is right up there with the best throwers in the section. Whether we’ll be a well-rounded team, I don’t know yet. I think we could develop some depth.’’

GF Central

Coach: Eric Polries.

2013 results: The Knights finished seventh in the East Region meet and 11th at state.

Key graduation losses: Katarina Reller, Lily Larsen. Ali Lindsay, Taylor Ray.

Returning region/state individual placers: Fr. Karly Ackley (1st at region/6th at state in 3,200, 5th at region in 1,600), jr. Rachel Cox (8th at region in 1,600), jr. Katie McCoy (6th at region in discus).

Other returning high scorers: Soph. Grace Finney (pole vault).

Potential new impact scorers: Soph. Jasmine Lindblad (throws), fr. Lexi Grinolds (sprints), soph. Desi Hanson (sprints), soph. Sophia Nelson (sprints/jumps), soph. Grace Roehl (distances), 7th-grader Alexis Roehl (distances), 7th-grader Mandy Williamson (distances), 8th-grader Rachel Torrey (distances).

Coach Polries says: “Our strength will be our distance squad. They are coming off of a fall EDC cross country championship and a top-five finish at the state meet. The other girls can learn a lot from them about big-event competition. I think Karly Ackley will contend for high places at state. Rachel Cox should do real well, too, and we have some other good young (distance) runners. We should have a good 4x800 relay. We also have a big group of sprinters. But it is a lot of new, young athletes on the team.’’

Red River

Coach: Tracey Heisler.

2013 results: The Roughriders finished third in the East Region meet and fourth at the state meet.

Hannah Arason (1st at state/1st at region in javelin, 4th at region/tied for 3rd at state in high jump), soph. Elli Strand (8th at region/7th at state in javelin), soph. Tiahna Burian (6th at region in 200, 7th at region in long jump); sr. Ariana Storbakken (2nd at region in triple jump, 4th region in 100 hurdles), soph. Gretchen Schriener (4th at region in 3,200).

Other returning high scorers: Soph. Bailee Enlow (pole vault, sprints), jr. Kya Glenn (sprints, jumps).

Potential new impact scorers: Fr. Ashley Conneran (distances), fr. Hannah Schreiner (hurdles, sprints).

Coach Heisler says: “We have a lot of unknowns. We’re young, and we have a ton of new kids out. But we do have a great foundation to build around. Hannah is defending state champion in the javelin and she’ll be a force in the high jump. And Ashley, who holds the school record in the 100 and 200, is looking fantastic.’’
