Events

Park vehicle passes are required for all events at North Dakota and Minnesota state parks. Vehicle passes are $7 daily and $35 annually in both states.

• Feb. 25: "Bikecicle" fat tire bike race, downtown Grand Forks and Greenway. Registration from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m., with race start at 1:30 p.m.; race starts and finishes at Rhombus Guys Brewing Company, 116 S. Third St. Registration $30 through Feb. 24, $40 on race day. • March 2: Candle Light Ski and Owl Prowl, 6 to 9 p.m., Rydell National Wildlife Refuge, 17788 349th St. SE, Erskine, Minn. Event coincides with the full moon, and Golden Pond and Church Lake trails will be groomed and lighted. Info: Lisa Wiersma, (218) 687-2229 ext. 10 or lisa_wiersma@fws.gov.

• March 3: Northland Fat Bike Rally, Lake Bemidji State Park. This is the only time during the winter that park trails will be open for fat biking. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center, followed by a mandatory 10 a.m. meeting and race at 11 a.m. Sponsored by Bemidji Area Mountain Bikers. Info: (218) 308-2300.

Fishing

• March 1: Early Bird drawing deadline for Scheels Boundary Battle Catfish Tournament, set for June 23-24 on the Red River in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Early Bird drawing, which is good for free entry into the 2019 Boundary Battle tourney, will be held at 7 p.m. June 22 during the pre-tournament rules meeting at Scheels in Grand Forks. • June 22-23: 42nd annual Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce Walleye Tournament, Devils Lake. Early Bird entry date is March 31, and five of the teams entered by then will win back their entry fee of $275 per team. Grahams Island State Park is tournament headquarters. • Aug. 10-12: Becoming an Outdoors Woman guided sturgeon fishing trip on the Rainy River. Cost is $225, which includes two nights lodging (two women per hotel room), guides, boats, rods and bait. Limited to 12 participants, and while openings remain, the event traditionally fills quickly. Birding

• May 16-19: Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, various sites in northwest Minnesota near Detroit Lakes, Minn. Tours of Hamden Slough and Tamarac national wildlife refuges are part of this year's 21st annual festival. Noah Stryker, who set a world record in 2015 by seeing 6,042 birds, more than half the birds on earth, whiel traveling 41 countries and all seven continents, will be the festival's keynote speaker. Brad Dokken

Brad Dokken is a reporter and editor of the Herald's Sunday Northland Outdoors pages. Dokken joined the Herald company in November 1985 as a copy editor for Agweek magazine and joined the Herald staff in 1989. He worked as a copy editor in the features and news departments before becoming outdoors editor in 1998. He also writes a blog called Compass Points. A Roseau, Minn., native, Dokken is a graduate of Bemidji State University.
