OUTDOORS CALENDAR

First Day Hikes are scheduled at several state parks across the region, including Turtle River State Park west of Grand Forks and Lake Bemidji and Itasca state parks in northwest Minnesota.

Events

Park vehicle passes are required for all events at North Dakota and Minnesota state parks. Vehicle passes are $7 daily and $35 annually in both states.

• Jan. 27: Candlelight Snowshoe, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Hayes Lake State Park, Minn. Meet at the picnic shelter. Info: (218) 425-7504.

• Jan. 27: Lantern lit Snowshoe and Ski Event, 5 to 7:30 p.m., Itasca State Park. Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center. Limited snowshoes available on a first-come, first-served basis. Info: (218) 699-7251 or itasca.statepark@state.mn.us.

• Feb. 3: Sixth annual AK Vintage Snowmobile Show, Blue Moose, East Grand Forks. Registration from 8 to 11 a.m., $5 per entry. • Feb. 3: David Johnson Vintage Sno-Cat Spectacular, Pioneer Farm, 2 miles west of Roseau on state Highway 11. • Feb. 24: Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe Event, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Lake Bronson State Park, Minn. Meet at the Visitor Center. Info: (218) 754-2200.

• Feb. 25: Wild Outdoors Women (WOW) Weekend, Lake Metigoshe State Park. Outdoor learning event for women 16 and older who wish to learn or improve on outdoor skills associated with several outdoor recreational activities. • Feb. 24: Lantern-lit Snowshoe Event along the Schoolcraft Trail, 5:30 to 8 p.m., Itasca State Park, Minn. Meet at the Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center. Info: (218) 699-7251 or itasca.statepark@state.mn.us.

• March 3: Northland Fat Bike Rally, Lake Bemidji State Park. This is the only time during the winter that park trails will be open for fat biking. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center, followed by a mandatory 10 a.m. meeting and race at 11 a.m. Sponsored by Bemidji Area Mountain Bikers. Info: (218) 308-2300.

Fishing

• Jan. 5-7: Fifth Annual North American Ice Fishing Circuit North Dakota State Qualifier, Lake Metigoshe near Bottineau, N.D. The tournament is set for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, with weigh-in at 2 p.m. at the Bottineau Armory. Events preceding the tournament include a fishing seminar from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5 in the Bottineau Armory and a Kids' Ice Camp beginning at noon Saturday, Jan. 6 at Lake Metigoshe State Park. Brad Dokken

Brad Dokken is a reporter and editor of the Herald's Sunday Northland Outdoors pages. Dokken joined the Herald company in November 1985 as a copy editor for Agweek magazine and joined the Herald staff in 1989. He worked as a copy editor in the features and news departments before becoming outdoors editor in 1998. He also writes a blog called Compass Points. A Roseau, Minn., native, Dokken is a graduate of Bemidji State University.
